WELCOME TO THE ESPANOLA SKATING CLUB
Our Club mission is to provide skating programs for all levels of skaters. Our skating season runs from September until March. We may offer extended Spring and summer sessions dependent on Coach and Ice availability.
The Espanola Skating Club is a registered club of Skate Canada and is in the Skate Ontario Region. Part of our club registration fee includes an individual Skate Canada membership fee paid to Skate Canada. You will receive a Skate Canada membership number that will be required when registering for testing and competitions. Once memberships are registered with Skate Canada, skaters can find their numbers on their Uplifter profile. This number also gives you access to the Skate Canada National member login site. You should visit these websites on a regular basis to obtain updated information for anything and everything you need and want to know about the sport of skating.

Any concerns or issues are to be submitted in writing and will be addressed at the next scheduled executive meeting held at the beginning of each month. We cannot help TO solve a problem if we do not know about it.
Who’s who?
All board positions int eh Espanola Skating Club are volunteer elected positions. It ois due to the hard work of these individuals that our children are able to skate at all levels. The ESC board is active 12 months of the year – organizing fundraising activities, registering skaters, testing and recording skaters progress, organizing other opportunities for skaters to perform and display their skills, and carrying out the multitude of other details related to the smooth operation of our club.

Skating Etiquette
To ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience, we ask that the skaters, and parents follow these rules.
Skater’s Responsibility:
Skaters must wear appropriate skating attire during regular sessions. Clothes must be neat, tidy and appropriate. Baggy clothing is dangerous and restrictive clothing limits a skaters range of motion. Jeans are not permitted. Long hair must be tied back. Skaters should not wear any bobby pins or other loose items that may fall and trip another skater.
All Canskaters MUST wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.
Rink doors must be closed during a skating session.
Only Skate Canada members and coaches may enter the ice surface.
No food or drink is allowed on the ice surface with the exception of water for our starskate skaters
Dressing rooms must be kept clean and orderly. Trash is to be placed in the bins provided.
Parent’s Responsibility
The responsibilities of the club can only be met by parent participation since the club is operated by the parents of the skaters for all of the skaters. Parents are expected to contribute to the overall operation of the club in the following areas
Allow your skater to control their own dreams and ambitions
Encourage your child to believe in themselves. Be positive in their accomplishments and supportive during the ups and downs.
Keep updated by reading the emails sent from our uplifter account, checking our facebook page and checking the calendar on uplifter for any non-skating days.
Ensure your skater is provided with appropriate skating attire and equipment.
ESC requires compulsory fundraising to help keep the skaters’ fees as low as possible. Funds are raised to offset the cost of ice rental which is the club’s largest expense. All programs offered by ESC are subsidized and since all members benefit, it is expected that all will volunteer.
OTHER INFORMATION
Skating Equipment
Depending on the level of skating your child is at, the equipment you need and cost of that equipment will vary. For those beginning in the CanSkate program, figure skates are not necessary. However as a skater progresses into the StarSkate programs, better and more diverse types of equipment will become an integral part of their skating career.
Tips for Blade Sharpening
Have skates sharpened by a good skate sharpening company as soon as they are purchased. The bottom toe pick should NEVER be removed; it is an integral part of the skate design and it is essential for proper balance. Skates should be resharpened after approximately 30 hrs of skating depending on both usage and care. We recommend Blades and Things in Little Current for high quality sharpening.

Caring for Skates
Boots and Blades can be expensive. Proper care of skates can help your investment last as long as possible.
Skate Guards must be worn whenever the skater is walking on any surface other than ice. Walking on concrete floors or gritty surfaces quickly damages the edges and sharpening of the blades. The blades and boot soles should be dry before putting the soft guards on and the hard guards should be cleaned regularly. Cold blades get wet from condensation and will rust if the guards are left on.
ESC Coaching Expenses 2024-2025
